Author bio

Tasmina Perry trained as a lawyer in England and for a while it looked as if her life would follow a neat, predictable path. She finished her law degree at Birmingham University, started work in the legal world and had a conventional career lined up.

Then a pop band changed everything.

She likes to tell the story of sitting in a Manchester café, spotting a very young Take That at the next table and deciding on the spot to ask for an interview. That impulsive moment led to her first staff job at a women’s magazine and showed her that writing, not law, was where she felt most alive.

In the years that followed she threw herself into journalism. Perry wrote about celebrity, fashion and relationships for titles such as Marie Claire, Glamour and Heat, moved quickly up the masthead and eventually edited major national magazines, including the UK edition of InStyle. She also launched her own boutique travel and style magazine, Jaunt, combining glossy photography with stories about the places that inspired her.

Those years in magazines fed directly into her fiction. Working on cover lines and celebrity profiles honed her feel for pace and character, but it also gave her a front‑row seat on how fame, money and image really work. When she finally sat down in the evenings to draft a novel, she drew on those experiences, swapping real‑life stars for fictional families and turning the private worries she saw in interviews into storylines.

Her debut, Daddy’s Girls, introduced readers to four glamorous sisters whose tyrannical father is found dead, and quickly climbed into the Sunday Times bestseller list. She followed it with novels like Gold Diggers, Guilty Pleures and Original Sin, big‑cast dramas about heiresses, tycoons and dynasties built on luxury brands. Sun‑drenched locales, from the Caribbean to the Côte d’Azur and Manhattan, became a hallmark, but so did the idea that behind the parties and private jets there is always a secret someone is desperate to hide.

Over time her books have blended more mystery and emotional depth into that glossy surface. Kiss Heaven Goodbye traces the long shadow of one terrible night on a private island. Dual‑timeline stories such as The Proposal, The Last Kiss Goodbye and The House on Sunset Lake weave together 1950s debutantes, Cold War explorers and modern women trying to understand the choices made decades before they were born. Later standalones like Deep Blue Sea, The Pool House and Friend of the Family lean into psychological suspense, asking what happens when an apparently perfect marriage or friendship comes under real pressure.

Perry also enjoys writing in different registers under pen names. As Mia James she and her husband, journalist John Perry, created the Ravenwood Mysteries trilogy, a young adult series set at an eerie London boarding school where vampires and ancient guardians lurk among the rich kids. As J.L. Butler she turns to legal and psychological thrillers: Mine and Alone follow female lawyers whose personal lives collide messily with dangerous cases, and both have attracted interest from film and television.

Alongside her novels she keeps a foot in journalism and mentoring. She has appeared on television and radio, judged beauty and style awards, and worked as a mentor for young women through charity initiatives. More recently she has founded Sunflower & Co, a small creative studio and imprint that produces her mysteries and original fiction from a boathouse office on the Thames. She also writes newsletters about creativity and the writing life, sharing practical advice with readers who want to start projects of their own.

Perry’s books now number more than twenty and have sold millions of copies worldwide, translated into many languages, but her tone remains direct and approachable. Whether she is writing about a debutante ball in 1958, a journalist at an ultra‑exclusive restaurant or a frazzled mother letting a houseguest stay too long, she is usually interested in the same thing: how ordinary hopes and fears play out when you drop them into an extraordinary setting.

She lives in London with her husband, their son and what she cheerfully describes as too many shoes, still drawing story ideas from travel, conversations and the everyday drama of city life.
