Series background & context
Perry Mason follows a California defence lawyer who treats investigation as part of representing a client. Mason does not simply wait for the police to finish their work and then argue over the results. He asks questions, examines the circumstances, and looks for evidence that may change the apparent case against the person he has agreed to help. Legal strategy and detective work are closely connected, making the books both mysteries and stories about the contest over what can be proved.
Mason's secretary, Della Street, and private investigator Paul Drake are central to his working world. Della offers a trusted presence in the office, while Drake helps gather information beyond it. District attorney Hamilton Burger supplies a recurring opponent. The familiar group gives the series continuity, but each client's problem introduces another collection of witnesses, suspects, and possible motives. Mason has to discover which pieces belong together before the official account becomes impossible to challenge.
A client's first explanation is rarely the whole problem.
The Case of the Velvet Claws begins with a woman seeking help over threatened exposure in a scandal sheet. The attempt to deal with blackmail soon leads Mason toward a more dangerous situation. The Case of the Sulky Girl is another early entry, establishing the lawyer's world at the beginning of the series. These opening novels introduce a forceful investigator who is willing to question what he is told and follow a case beyond the boundaries others would prefer him to observe.
Across the books, the pressure often moves from private conversations and discoveries toward a legal confrontation. Statements can conflict, an object can acquire a new significance, and a confident accusation can depend on an assumption nobody has properly tested. Gardner uses those changes to keep the puzzle active. The California setting and the repeated return to offices, interviews, and courtrooms give Mason's ingenuity a practical arena: the truth has to survive questioning, not merely occur to him in private.
The tone is a brisk legal mystery, built around evidence, misdirection, and the lawyer's willingness to keep working when appearances are against his client. The novels offer individual cases within a continuing professional circle, so readers can return to familiar characters without following one crime through every title. Beginning with The Case of the Velvet Claws gives the clearest introduction to Mason's approach. Later books develop a long sequence of different problems, with their shared appeal resting on the moment when a fact that seemed settled becomes open to another interpretation. The solution belongs to each story, but the habit of questioning appearances belongs to Mason throughout.
