Author bio

Marta Perry knew early what she wanted. At eight, after reading her first Nancy Drew book, she was not dreaming of becoming the detective. She wanted to be the person who made the story.

That idea sat quietly for a long time.

Before novels, Perry wrote in smaller forms and more practical ones. While working as a Director of Christian Education, she began writing short children's stories for Sunday school take-home papers. One of those early pieces sold on its third submission, for sixteen dollars, and she has said that was enough to convince her there was no turning back. Hundreds of magazine stories followed before she moved on to the longer fiction she had always wanted to write.

Pennsylvania shaped almost everything that came after. Perry has spent most of her life in rural Pennsylvania, and she draws on her Pennsylvania Dutch roots in book after book. She has described Pleasant Valley, one of her best-known Amish settings, as a valley based very much on what she sees when she looks out her office window. Food, family, church life, and the pull between tradition and change all show up again and again in her fiction.

That background helped her find the lane many readers know her for now.

Her Amish novels tend to mix everyday community life with personal crossroads. In Leah's Choice, Rachel's Garden, and Anna's Return, she writes about teachers, widows, and women coming home to Pleasant Valley with more on their minds than romance. The Keepers of the Promise books widen the frame, weaving present-day love stories together with diaries, letters, and older family histories. In later series like Promise Glen, she keeps the same warm attention to work, family duty, and the quiet courage it takes to begin again.

She also likes turning up the pressure. Books like Murder in Plain Sight, Where Secrets Sleep, and Amish Outsider bring crime, hidden motives, and real physical danger into Amish country without losing sight of the people at the center. Even in suspense, Perry's stories usually stay grounded in community. Readers come for the mystery, but they often stay for the sense that farms, shops, schools, and church basements matter just as much as the plot twists.

Over the years, that steady approach has built a long career. Perry has published more than seventy novels, and her work has picked up honors including a RITA finalist nod, a HOLT Medallion win, and the Maroon and Gold Pen Award from the Bloomsburg University Library Association. Those awards say something, but so does the range of her backlist. She has written small-town contemporary romance, Amish family stories, romantic suspense, and holiday books, often moving from one kind of story to another without losing her voice.

She still sounds like someone who likes the work.

Perry lives with her husband in a century-old farmhouse in the Pennsylvania countryside, and she spends winters at a home in South Carolina. When she is not writing, she has said she enjoys church life, travel, gardening, baking, and time with her three children and six grandchildren. That mix of steadiness and curiosity feels a lot like her books. They are rooted in place, interested in ordinary people, and always watching for the moment when a life can change.
