Series background & context
Erin M. Evans's RuneScape novels explore big moments from Gielinor's history. They are fantasy adventures shaped by the game's gods, factions, old wars, and magical lore, but they focus on people caught inside those huge events rather than treating the setting like a list of facts.
The Gift of Guthix is set during the founding of Falador and the Fremennik Great Invasion. In Asgarnia, tribes have gathered under Lord Raddalin, whose new kingdom looks powerful but remains fragile. His advisers, including an uneasy mix of Black and White knights, believe a discovery in the North could change the balance of power.
History is being made, and plenty of people want to control it.
The book follows a lowly scribe and a jarl's son as the fate of Raddalin's kingdom begins to rest on their choices. Magic is at the center of the conflict, not as a simple tool but as a force that changes societies, creates fear, and gives ambitious leaders new ways to hurt one another. Betrayals, civil conflict, and the threat of invasion keep the pressure on.
Shadows of Amascut shifts to the Kharidian Desert and the Hereditas Expedition. Pontifex Bilrach leads the Mahjarrat in a search for artifacts connected to the dead god Tumeken. They need to complete the Ritual of Rejuvenation or face extinction, but the alliance forced by Zaros is full of people with separate aims and very little reason to trust one another.
The desert is unforgiving.
As the expedition struggles through heat, danger, mounting casualties, and false leads, the search becomes as much about loyalty and fanaticism as it is about lost relics. The Mahjarrat's long lives and ancient rivalries give the story a different flavor from The Gift of Guthix, while the human cost of their mission remains sharply present.
Together, these novels offer two views of RuneScape's deep past. One looks at a kingdom trying to form around new magic and military pressure. The other follows an expedition in which survival, devotion, and betrayal collide in the desert. Both have room for readers new to the fiction, while longtime players will recognize major places, figures, and historical turning points.
Start with The Gift of Guthix. It is the first of Evans's RuneScape novels and introduces her approach to the setting through the origins of magic and the early history of Asgarnia. Continue with Shadows of Amascut for a separate, darker historical adventure in the Kharidian Desert.
