The Books of the Usurper is Erin M. Evans's original epic fantasy mystery series, set in the empire of Semilla. Its central idea is wonderfully practical and dangerous: the past is stored, catalogued, and guarded, but it can still break loose when the wrong people start looking for it.

The first book, Empire of Exiles, begins when Quill, an apprentice scribe, is sent to retrieve objects from the Imperial Archives. The assignment sounds dull, at least by Quill's standards. Then a murder points back to an old failed rebellion, and the artifacts he has uncovered turn out to carry more than historical value.

Quill is soon working with a small, unevenly matched group that includes the archivist Amadea Gintanas, the mage Richa, and a detective with reasons not to trust easy answers. Their job is part investigation and part damage control. They must work out who is using the empire's buried history as a weapon, while people in power would often prefer the whole matter stayed buried.

The archives matter as much as any palace or battlefield.

Evans builds the series around records, relics, magical objects, and the choices made by people who decide which stories get preserved. Semilla has scars from an earlier coup, and those scars shape its laws, its institutions, and the fears of its citizens. The books treat research as real adventure. Finding the right document, recognizing a symbol, or knowing why an object was sealed away can be the difference between stopping a threat and helping it spread.

Relics of Ruin continues with the same core team after the first conspiracy has been exposed. When Quill and Richa find the missing bones of a saint, the disappearance raises a new question: how could such an important relic leave a protected vault? The answer has consequences well beyond a single shrine, especially as an old enemy gathers strength beyond the Salt Wall.

These are team-based books rather than the story of one lone chosen hero. The characters have competing loyalties, blind spots, and very different ideas about duty. That gives the mysteries some welcome friction. They have to learn how to rely on each other, even when the evidence suggests someone close to them may be wrong.

Expect layered investigations, political pressure, bits of dry humor, and magic that comes with history attached.
