Series background & context
Riven Chronicles is a young adult science fiction duology with parallel worlds, war fallout, and a heroine who has been shaped more by battle than by ordinary teenage life. The books move quickly, but underneath the action there is a steady question running through both of them, namely, what happens when a girl built for duty begins to want something more personal.
Riven comes from Neospes, a world ravaged by an android war. In The Almost Girl, she is sent to modern Earth to find Caden, the lost brother of her prince and the key to restoring her world. She knows how to fight, how to survive, and how to obey. What she does not know, at least at first, is how to live in a place where power works differently and emotions are harder to keep in line.
That is the hook of the series. Riven is capable almost to the point of intimidation, but Howard does not write her as unshakable. Her mission forces her into questions of identity, family, and trust, especially as her feelings start complicating the clean soldier logic she would rather rely on.
It is part rescue story, part rebellion story, and part coming-of-age story.
In The Fallen Prince, the fragile peace that seemed possible after the first book does not hold. Riven's hunt for her father, and the growing threat to Neospes, pull her back into conflict with even more at stake. The second book keeps the series focused on loyalty and consequence while expanding the pressure on the wider world.
Read these in order for the strongest effect. If you like fast-moving YA with portal science fiction energy, a combat-ready heroine, and romance that complicates rather than softens the main plot, Riven Chronicles is an easy series to sink into.
