Series background & context

Co-written by Amalie Howard and Angie Morgan, Lords of Essex is a Regency romance series with more plot than the average ballroom flirtation. These books love a secret identity, a hidden past, a little danger, and a couple who have to do more than exchange loaded glances before they earn their ending.

The series opens with My Rogue, My Ruin, where Archer Croft lives a double life as the Masked Marauder, stealing from the rich and helping the poor while trying not to fall for Briannon Findlay. My Darling, My Disaster turns toward hidden identity and political trouble with Princess Svetlanka, who slips into life as a lady's maid while Gray Northridge fights his own darker impulses. My Hellion, My Heart pairs irrepressible Irina with scarred war hero Henry, and My Scot, My Surrender shifts the action toward Scotland with Sorcha and Brandt.

The through line is that nearly everyone here is being misread by society. The stern marquess is secretly a thief. The maid is really a princess. The rake has limits. The scarred woman is far tougher, and far more vulnerable, than gossip allows. That gives the books a nice charge, because the romances are built around discovery as much as attraction.

These books are busy in a good way.

Expect masked robberies, traitors, scandal, sudden marriages, and the occasional family complication that refuses to stay politely offstage. The tone is steamy and dramatic, but there is a warm center to the series too. Once the couples start trusting each other, the books become as much about partnership as desire.

You can read each novel on its own, but starting with My Rogue, My Ruin gives the clearest sense of the world and the network of people moving through it. If you like Regency romance with mystery, strong heroines, and a little extra momentum in the plot, Lords of Essex is a solid fit.
