Author bio
Amalie Howard grew up in Trinidad and Tobago, where books, music, sports, and daydreaming all seemed to fit into the same day. She has said she spent much of her childhood reading, climbing mango trees, singing, and chasing adventure, which feels like a neat preview of the worlds she writes now.
Writing started early. One of her poems was published when she was twelve, and at fifteen she won a Queen's Commonwealth Essay award for a short story. She studied at St. Augustine Girls' High School in Trinidad, where she also sang in choir, played in the steel pan orchestra, and competed in several sports. Sitting still was never really the plan.
She later went to Colby College in Maine, where she studied French and International Studies, then continued postgraduate work in French literature in Paris. Before publishing novels, she worked in a string of very different jobs, including research, sales, and corporate roles on Wall Street. She also traveled widely, and that sense of movement shows up all through her fiction.
A lot of readers first meet her through young adult fantasy. Bloodspell leans into witches, vampires, and forbidden attraction. Waterfell heads underwater with an exiled sea princess. The Almost Girl brings in parallel worlds and android war, while Alpha Goddess pulls from Hindu mythology and gives it a modern teen pulse.
She does not stay in one lane.
Her historical romances show the same restless energy. The Beast of Beswick and Always Be My Duchess are good examples of how she handles banter, emotional friction, and heroines who refuse to stay quiet just because society expects it. Queen Bee brings that impulse to a younger audience, and The Starlight Heir opens things out into romantasy, with star magic, court politics, and a heroine who starts at a forge instead of a ballroom.
Across all of that, a few things keep showing up. Howard likes women who push back against the role other people picked for them. She likes high stakes, whether that means demons, dukes, spies, or secret identities. And she clearly enjoys stories where romance matters, but so do loyalty, family, and the question of who gets to claim power.
Her Indo-Caribbean background and interest in inclusion show up again and again in the kinds of characters she chooses to center.
These days she lives in Colorado with her husband and three children. When she is not writing, she has said she is usually reading, traveling, riding her Harley, or sneaking in a power nap. That mix feels about right. Her books are lively, wide-ranging, and clearly written by someone who still likes adventure very much.
