Riley Harper Mystery Books in Order

The Riley Harper mysteries lean a bit closer to suspense and police procedural than Hall's softest cozies, though they still care a lot about place and recurring relationships. Riley starts the series as a police officer whose career in Phoenix has been wrecked after she testified against her partner in a bad shooting. She takes the one job available, on Sandpiper Bay, a small island off the coast of Maine, and arrives with her mother and daughter hoping for a reset.

She does not get one.

The very first appeal of the series is that contrast between Riley's past and her new setting. Sandpiper Bay looks quiet, almost too quiet, but its size makes every case personal. Everybody knows everybody. Outsiders are noticed. Old loyalties run deep. Riley has training, but she does not yet have local trust, which makes every investigation harder.

The books use that tension well. A suspicious death that should be easy to dismiss, a storm-bound murder, a missing child during a Fourth of July crowd, all of these plots force Riley to prove herself while protecting the family she brought to the island. Her partner Matt, the chief, and the town itself become part of the rhythm.

This is a good series for readers who want more urgency than a cupcake cozy, but not full-on grim darkness. Riley is competent, wounded, and easy to root for. The cases move, the island setting stays vivid, and the family thread gives the books heart.
