Riley Sager is the pen name of Todd Ritter, a Pennsylvania native who writes standalone suspense novels built around a simple, unnerving question: What happened here, and who can be trusted? He grew up in a ranch-style house in rural Pennsylvania, surrounded by woods and open country, a landscape that later shows up in the isolated homes, summer camps, and uneasy neighborhoods of his fiction.

Ritter studied film in college because he hoped to become a film critic. Movies still matter to the way he thinks about a story, especially old suspense pictures and horror setups where an ordinary place turns threatening. Before novels became his full-time work, he spent about two decades in newspapers, working as a reporter, editor, and graphic designer.

A newspaper layoff gave the long-running writing dream a sharper deadline.

He had already published mysteries under his own name, Todd Ritter, including the Kat Campbell books, and wrote Things Half in Shadow as Alan Finn. When he and his agent sought a new publishing start, he adopted the name Riley Sager. The first novel under that byline, Final Girls, arrived in 2017 and followed a survivor of a massacre revisiting memories she would rather leave buried.

The book set the template without turning the novels into a series. Sager's stories stand alone, but readers will recognize the ingredients: a person carrying old grief, a closed-in setting, a past event that has never been properly explained, and clues that make the obvious answer look less secure. The Last Time I Lied returns to a summer camp where three girls disappeared. Lock Every Door turns a prestigious Manhattan apartment building into a place with rules that feel wrong from the start.

He also likes places with their own bad reputations. In Home Before Dark, a woman goes back to the Vermont house made infamous by her father's horror memoir. The Only One Left places a caregiver in a decaying coastal mansion with a woman accused of killing her family decades earlier.

Later novels keep changing the scenery while holding onto the same pressure, moving from suburban New Jersey to an overnight train in 1954. Even when the premises nod to haunted houses, slasher movies, or locked-room mysteries, the focus stays on people trying to make sense of fear, guilt, and half-known history.

The danger is usually close by, often behind a familiar door.

Ritter lives in Princeton, New Jersey, and writes full time. As Riley Sager, he has published a new thriller almost every year since Final Girls. His books suit readers who want fast chapters, creepy settings, and plots that keep rearranging the facts.
