Right of Retribution

by William D Arand

2020

Warner is a tired call center worker and devoted dad until his little girl is nearly killed, exposing a hidden world of monsters and magic. Chosen as the living embodiment of Retribution, he turns his grief into a terrifying, very personal form of justice.

Series background & context

Right of Retribution follows Warner, a burned out call center worker and single father whose quiet life ends the day his daughter is almost killed. The attack rips away the thin layer of normalcy hiding a world full of monsters, magic, and beings who believe they have the right to feed on or use humanity however they like.

In the middle of that discovery, Warner learns that he is not entirely human either. He becomes the living embodiment of Retribution, able to weigh the scales of people’s lives and decide whether they will pay through penance or death. What starts as a father’s desperate response to injustice grows into an ongoing, bloody crusade against abusers, killers, and corrupt institutions.

Over three books, the series tracks how that power eats at him physically and morally. Warner builds a found family, juggles multiple relationships, and tries to raise his daughter while also serving as a walking, often terrifying form of justice. The tone is harsh, violent, and emotionally charged, with a focus on consequences and on how even righteous anger can go badly wrong when it becomes your whole identity.
