Privateer's Commission
by William D Arand
2024
Ralph Turlan uses his family’s letter of marque to blur the line between smuggler and sanctioned pirate on the edge of the Terran Confed. When war with the Blood of Calesat erupts, a new commission turns his freelance hustle into officially licensed destruction.
Series background & context
Privateer’s Commission is a swashbuckling space opera told from the perspective of a man who makes his living in the gray zones of the law. Ralph Turlan comes from a family that holds a hereditary letter of marque from the Terran Confederation, effectively giving them permission to prey on certain targets so long as it suits the government’s interests.
Ralph uses that paper as an excuse to be a smuggler, fixer, and sometimes very legal pirate. When tensions between the Confed and a faction called the Blood of Calesat boil over into open war, he is handed a fresh commission that dramatically expands his hunting grounds and his responsibilities. Suddenly he is not just dodging customs and collecting bribes but being paid to burn enemy ships down to their deck plates.
The books follow Ralph and his crew of misfits as they bounce from job to job, juggling profit, politics, and survival. Battles are big and loud, but there is always an eye on how the decisions made in one skirmish ripple through trade networks, alliances, and personal loyalties. Privateer’s Commission is a good fit if you like your space battles served with gallows humor and a captain who will absolutely take the slightly worse deal if it means a better story later.
