Dungeon Deposed
by William D Arand
2018
Cast out of his adventurers’ guild for being too weak, Ryker returns with a secret prize, a dormant dungeon core. When the crystal finally awakens, his revenge plan collapses into chaos and he finds himself bound to the dungeon and entangled in noble politics.
Series background & context
Dungeon Deposed opens with Ryker, a frustrated adventurer who has been driven out of his guild for not being strong enough. On his way out, he walks off with something no one else realized the value of: an inactive dungeon core, a crystal that can create monsters, treasure, and entire underground realms from mana.
Ryker spends years farming and planning, waiting for the core to wake so he can unleash it on the people who humiliated him. When the dungeon finally stirs, nothing goes the way he imagined. Instead of a clean revenge tale, he finds himself tied to the core, elevated to nobility, and planted squarely in the middle of a queendom’s politics and a brutal religious war.
Across the trilogy, the series combines dungeon building and resource management with court intrigue and battlefield tactics. Ryker’s relationship with the dungeon shifts from tool to partner to something stranger, and the story keeps circling the question of what happens when a man who wanted to burn everything down is suddenly responsible for the people living above his power. Expect dark humor, violent set pieces, and a protagonist who is just unstable enough to keep everyone guessing.
