Monster's Mercy
by William D Arand
2019
Rene spent his life killing to feed the Monster in his mind, buying brief peace with other people’s blood. When a job goes wrong and he dies, a Watcher sentences him to a second life centuries earlier in another world, where every act must truly help others.
Series background & context
Monster’s Mercy starts with a man who has already spent a lifetime doing unforgivable things. Rene is a hitman driven by the Monster in his head, a separate presence that forces him to kill to earn brief moments of peace. When a final job goes wrong and he dies, he is dragged before a Watcher who judges his life and offers a brutal kind of mercy.
Instead of immediate punishment, Rene is sent hundreds of years into the past and into another world. His sentence is simple in theory and crushing in practice: live a life that genuinely benefits others, with every action judged as it happens. For nearly two decades he manages to keep his head down and build a quiet, loving existence, only for events to drag him back into the underworld he thought he had left behind.
The series follows him as he balances an idyllic home life with his family against the ruthless persona he adopts in the city, where he becomes a moneylender, gang leader, and masked enforcer. Game like abilities and strange gifts from the Watcher give him tools to control his environment, but using them too freely risks putting him right back where he started. Monster’s Mercy is violent, morally tangled, and surprisingly tender in places, asking whether someone who has done terrible things can ever truly earn a clean slate.
