Reluctant Royals Books in Order

The Reluctant Royals series is Alyssa Cole's modern fairy tale playground. These books have princes, princesses, titles, tabloids, and impossible public expectations, but they are not built on passive wish fulfillment. Cole keeps asking what royalty would actually feel like if you were smart, busy, private, a little messy, or simply not interested in being turned into a symbol. The answer is funny, sexy, warm, and much more grounded than the setup first suggests.

The best entry point is A Princess in Theory, where grad student Naledi Smith keeps deleting emails that claim she is betrothed to an African prince. She has classes, jobs, bills, and no patience for nonsense. Prince Thabiso of Thesolo arrives expecting duty and gets a woman who refuses to play along. That clash between fantasy and reality, and between public expectation and private desire, gives the whole series its spark.

A Duke by Default widens the world and shifts the action to Scotland, where Portia Hobbs takes a swordmaking apprenticeship with Tavish McKenzie, a gruff master smith who turns out to have a title problem of his own. The novellas Once Ghosted, Twice Shy and Can't Escape Love matter, too. They step away from palace balconies and deepen the wider circle, bringing New York dating, queer romance, online friendship, insomnia, fandom, and escape rooms into the same universe.

The crowns matter, but friendship matters just as much.

That is clearest in A Prince on Paper, which brings Nya Jerami and Johan von Braustein into a fake engagement with very real feelings underneath it. By this point, the series feels less like isolated love stories and more like a lively social network of women, royals, aides, siblings, and friends whose lives keep brushing against one another. There is a genuine sense of community here, and it helps the books feel generous even when the characters are defensive or prickly.

Setting does a lot of work in this series. New York is busy and practical. Thesolo feels royal but contemporary. Scotland adds craft, weather, and class tension. Media attention, diplomatic expectations, family pressure, and mental health all shape the romances, so the conflicts are never just about whether two attractive people can finally admit they like each other.

If you want royal romance that keeps the sparkle but gives everybody a real interior life, this is what Reluctant Royals does best. The books are witty and openhearted, but they also care about politics, work, grief, self-worth, and the strange problem of falling in love when the whole world thinks it has a say. They are fairy tales, just with better emails and more emotional common sense.
