Series background & context
The Red Dirt Heart series is set on Sutton Station, a vast working cattle property in Australia’s outback. The landscape is hot, isolated, demanding, and central to every part of Charlie Sutton’s life.
Charlie runs the station the way his family always has, with hard work, few words, and very little room for vulnerability. Travis Craig is an American agronomy student who comes to Sutton Station to learn how people farm in one of the world’s harshest environments. He does not expect Charlie to become the most important part of his visit.
The red dirt gets into everything.
The series follows Charlie and Travis over several books as they build a relationship while dealing with work, distance, family illness, staff, grief, and the realities of running a remote cattle business. Their friends and family become an important part of the larger story, and the short holiday installment offers time with the station community.
This is a deeply place-based contemporary romance. There are cattle, long drives, heat, dust, wildlife, practical jobs, and a home that must be fought for every day. Charlie and Travis are not always good at talking about what they need, which gives the series much of its tension.
Start with Red Dirt Heart. The books form one continuing relationship arc and are best read in order.
