Reborn Assassin is one of Cooper's cleaner modern progression setups. Alistair Blackstar is headed toward magic academy life when it becomes impossible to ignore the fact that he is sharing his body with Ghost, a dead master assassin who has not given up on revenge. That gives the series an immediate split focus that works very well.

Alistair is learning how to survive school, classes, rivals, and magic systems. Ghost is trying to solve the mystery of his own death and push events in a much darker direction. The two are bound together whether they like it or not, so every success comes with tension baked in. Even the training scenes have extra pressure because Alistair is never developing in a vacuum.

The card-based battledeck system is another big selling point. Magic here is structured around spells, buffs, and summons in a way that keeps progression tactile without slowing the story down. It also fits the academy frame nicely, since learning the system feels like actual study instead of random stat gain.

If you like school settings but want something sharper than a straightforward student story, this series is a good fit. It has humor, danger, revenge energy, and enough mystery to keep the character growth from feeling purely mechanical.
