Series background & context
Cowboy Necromancer is one of those premises that sounds like a joke until the first pages prove otherwise. It is a post-apocalyptic LitRPG western set in the American Southwest, and it follows Sterling Monedero, a pepper farmer whose world gets dragged into something much darker and stranger than ordinary survival.
Sterling is the kind of lead who fits this landscape. He is stubborn, practical, and more dangerous than he first looks. Once necromancy enters the picture, his life opens into a wider conflict full of monsters, ruined highways, old myths, alien-looking threats, and a system that rewards power but never makes it cheap. He is not riding through a clean movie-western desert. He is crossing a broken world where history, folklore, and future-tech all rub against each other.
That blend is the real hook. The books pull from western imagery, road-story pacing, and game progression, but they never forget the place underneath it all. New Mexico and the broader Southwest are not just backdrops. They shape the mood, the danger, and the weird spiritual charge of the series. That gives the fights more grit and the quieter stretches more atmosphere.
You should expect a harsh setting, a lot of forward motion, and a hero who keeps getting pushed into larger responsibilities. The tone is tougher than Cooper's cozier work, but it still leaves room for odd humor, loyalty, and the strange comfort of companions in a dead-looking world. If you like LitRPG that feels dusty, dangerous, and a little haunted, this series has a lot going for it.
