Series background & context
The Randall and Carver books bring a slightly different energy to Blair Howard's mystery writing. They are still crime novels, still interested in lies, old wounds, and bad institutions, but the center is a duo rather than a lone wolf. Tucker Randall is a former FBI agent with a past he cannot fully set down. Mallory Carver is smart, funny, stubborn, and deeply invested in the cases that pull them together. The series gets a lot of mileage out of their push-pull chemistry.
That chemistry matters because the cases are often personal from the start. A missing niece. A wrongful conviction that may have hidden a serial killer. A honeymoon that turns into a body-and-secret problem before the bags are unpacked. These are not jobs that arrive neatly on a desk. They start with family panic, private grief, or somebody who no longer trusts the police to care. That gives the investigations a faster emotional hook than a standard procedural.
The two leads work well because they do not bring the same instincts to the table.
Tucker has training, field experience, and a habit of looking for patterns the official story missed. Mallory brings curiosity, nerve, and a refusal to stand back when danger gets close. She is not just tagging along, and the books are better for that. Their partnership feels like something being built case by case, which gives the series forward movement even when each novel has its own self-contained mystery.
The settings help too. Howard moves them through forests, small towns, old hotels, and other places where history and atmosphere can press on the case. That lets the books slide between missing-person suspense, cold-case investigation, and straight thriller territory without losing their identity. The crimes are contemporary, but the past is usually sitting nearby, waiting to complicate everything.
If you want Blair Howard with more duo banter, a little more romantic tension, and mysteries that stay rooted in personal stakes, Randall and Carver are a good place to land. The stories still move quickly, but they leave more room for two investigators learning how far they are willing to go for the same truth.
