Author bio
Blair Howard was born in Malvern in the United Kingdom, and his road to fiction was not a straight one. He served in the Royal Air Force, worked as a journalist, and spent years building a second career as a travel writer and photographer.
Long before detective novels took over, he was writing guidebooks and feature pieces about golf travel, vacations, and life on the road. That work produced dozens of travel books and thousands of published articles, and it sent him across the United States, Europe, and the Caribbean with notebook and camera in hand. He wrote for newspapers, magazines, and online outlets, which gave him a wide working life before he ever settled into crime fiction.
He came to novels later than many writers do.
His early fiction included Chickamauga, a Civil War novel built on years of research, but the big turning point came with Harry Starke in 2015. That book introduced a Chattanooga private investigator with a hard edge, sharp instincts, and a habit of stepping into places sensible people avoid. Readers responded, the series grew quickly, and Howard gradually shifted his attention away from travel writing and photography toward fiction full time.
You can see pieces of his earlier careers in the books. The journalist's eye shows up in the way he likes facts, pace, and clean scene setting. The traveler shows up in the range of places, from Tennessee streets and Caribbean islands to battlefields, back roads, and deep space. Even when he changes genre, he tends to write about people under pressure who have to keep moving.
Chattanooga became one of his most useful fictional homes. In the Harry Starke novels and the Harry Starke Genesis prequels, he uses the city as more than scenery. Its bridges, riverfront, neighborhoods, and old power structures keep feeding the mysteries. The Lt. Kate Gazzara books stay in that same world, but from the point of view of a police detective who has to solve murders while handling internal politics, bad bosses, and the grind of command.
He does not stay in one lane for long.
Howard has also written international thrillers like The Peacemaker, where enemies are forced to work together against a secret group willing to kill on a global scale. Then there is Avenger, which opened his Sovereign Stars military science fiction series and showed how easily his taste for pressure, danger, and fast-moving plots could travel into a completely different setting. Readers who enjoy one part of his bibliography often find there is another shelf nearby that uses the same storytelling muscle in a new way.
His historical novels matter too. Books like Chickamauga and The Mule Soldiers are grounded in research, but they still read like Howard, direct, physical, and interested in what war feels like to the people stuck inside it. He seems drawn to stories where the past refuses to sit quietly, whether that past belongs to a family, a city, a battlefield, or a whole civilization.
Now he lives in East Tennessee with his wife, Jo, and their Jack Russell terrier, Sally. That mix of English roots, military experience, journalism, travel, and long observation helps explain why his books move the way they do. They are built by someone who has spent a lot of time watching how people behave when the ground shifts under them.
