That is the heart of the Harry Starke Genesis books. They go back to the years when Harry was still inside the system, still learning how the city worked, and still finding out just how much damage a murder case can uncover if you follow it far enough.

The biggest difference from the main Harry Starke novels is the angle. These books are closer to straight police procedurals. Harry is not working alone, and he cannot simply kick over tables until someone talks. He has to deal with chain of command, bad bosses, department politics, and the limits that come with carrying a shield. That extra pressure gives the series a tighter, more boxed-in feel, which suits the early cases well.

In these books, Kate is Harry's partner, and the two of them do the job together, scene by scene, interview by interview, lead by lead. If you already know the later series, this is where the relationship gets its weight. You see why they trust each other, where they differ, and how much their partnership depends on both friction and respect. The prequel setup also gives the books a nice edge, because readers know the future will pull them onto different paths.

The cases themselves cover a good stretch of what Howard does best: brutal murders, cold-blooded professionals, missing girls, official cover stories that do not hold up, and conspiracies that reach well past a single victim. Even when the title seems to point to one person or one event, the books usually open outward into family pressure, civic power, and the everyday ugliness respectable people try to hide. Chattanooga feels younger here, but no cleaner.

This series also helps explain Harry himself. The stubbornness, the refusal to stop, the instinct to doubt the neat answer, it is all already there. So is the reason he eventually becomes the sort of detective who works better outside the rules than inside them. If the later books show the legend, Genesis shows how it was built.
