Series background & context
The Raine Benares books are comic fantasy adventures about an elf with a useful talent for finding things, a strong instinct for trouble, and a family history that includes pirates, thieves, and smugglers. Raine is a seeker, someone who tracks down lost objects and missing people. She is good at her job, but she is not looking to become the center of a fight over ancient magic.
That changes in Magic Lost, Trouble Found. When Raine becomes involved with an amulet linked to the Saghred, a soul-stealing stone of enormous power, her modest magical life gets much more dangerous. Goblins, necromancers, mages, and political factions all have their own reasons for wanting the Saghred. Raine has to survive long enough to decide what should be done with it.
The stone is a terrible roommate.
The first six novels follow the consequences of that bond. In Armed & Magical, Raine heads to the Isle of Mid, home to the Conclave and its prestigious sorcery school, while trying to solve a disappearance and escape people who want her dead. The Trouble with Demons brings a demon infestation and competing magical bonds. The later books keep widening the conflict, moving from personal survival to dangerous schemes that could reshape the Seven Kingdoms.
Raine's circle gives the series much of its energy. There is Mychael Eiliesor, a powerful spellsinger and guardian; Tamnais Nathrach, a goblin dark mage with a difficult past; and Phaelan Benares, Raine's pirate cousin. Their loyalties, arguments, and uneasy alliances help keep the books lively even when the stakes involve demons, magical artifacts, or the future of a kingdom.
The setting blends traditional fantasy ingredients with a modern, conversational narrator. There are elves, goblins, swords, spells, royal politics, and dangerous monsters, but Raine approaches all of it with the weary humor of someone who would prefer a normal job. The stories move quickly, with mysteries, cons, escapes, fights, and complicated romantic tension sharing the page.
After All Spell Breaks Loose, the series continues with Wedding Bells, Magic Spells, which brings Raine's wedding plans into the middle of high-stakes peace negotiations. Treasure & Treason and Ruins and Revenge shift more attention to Tam and Phaelan as they try to keep another powerful magical artifact from falling into the wrong hands.
For the clearest experience, start with Magic Lost, Trouble Found and read in order. Wild Card is a prequel novella about Raine's first meeting with Tam, and it works nicely before or after the opening novel.
