The SPI Files are urban fantasy mysteries set in a version of New York where supernatural creatures live in plain sight, protected by glamour and secrecy. Humans may think the city is crowded already. They have no idea how many vampires, goblins, shape-shifters, dragons, and mythological beings are sharing the sidewalks, trains, and office buildings.

Makenna Fraser is the guide to this hidden world. She is a seer, which means she can see past magical disguises and spot what other people miss. That ability lands her a job with Supernatural Protection and Investigations, or SPI, a covert organization that handles threats too strange and too dangerous for ordinary law enforcement.

The job title is less glamorous than the work.

The series starts with The Grendel Affair, when Makenna's early assignment leads to a brutal killing and a looming New Year's Eve disaster. From there, each book brings a new case, usually tied to a familiar myth or legendary object, while adding more pieces to SPI's complicated supernatural network. The cases are self-contained enough to be satisfying, but the friendships, enemies, and bigger dangers carry forward.

New York matters here. Subway tunnels, museum galas, luxury buildings, crowded streets, and hidden rooms beneath Manhattan all become useful places for a supernatural mystery to unfold. In The Dragon Conspiracy, cursed diamonds disappear during a Metropolitan Museum of Art gala. The Brimstone Deception centers on a designer drug that exposes the supernatural world to its users. In The Ghoul Vendetta, a criminal spree points toward a threat far larger than a few robberies.

Later books broaden the scale without losing the procedural feel. The Myth Manifestation traps SPI in a crisis involving a supernatural treaty gathering. The Phoenix Illusion turns an impossible building in New York into the center of a dangerous plan. The Solstice Countdown sends Makenna back to her hometown, where gifted people are vanishing and an old evil is waking. In The Gorgon Agenda, SPI must recover the Aegis, a weapon capable of turning people to stone.

The tone is brisk, funny, and action-focused, with plenty of creature lore but no need to memorize a rulebook before starting. Makenna learns the hidden world as she goes, so the first novel is a natural entry point for new readers.

Start with The Grendel Affair. After that, read in order. The cases get bigger, and the payoff is stronger when you know who has been helping, hiding, or waiting in the background.
