The Radio Hearts books are contemporary YA romances linked by music, summer restlessness, and teens standing right on the edge of adult life. These are smaller-scale stories than Poston's fantasy and science fiction novels, but they already show the things she does well: big feelings, funny voices, pop-culture energy, and characters trying to choose between staying safe and taking a real chance on themselves.

The Sound of Us has the breezy setup of a celebrity summer romance, but there is more going on under the surface. Junie Baltimore is a classic-rock-loving eighteen-year-old who stumbles across the former lead singer of Roman Holiday, the pop band she loves to hate, hiding out on the boardwalk. Keeping his secret could help her save the bar her father left behind, but it also puts her in the middle of questions about loyalty, money, and whether a headline-worthy romance is worth the mess it brings.

We Own the Night shifts to a different cast and a different corner of the country, but it keeps that same sense of a young woman trying to hear her own voice clearly. Ingrid North spends her days in a candy store and her nights as Niteowl, the anonymous radio DJ everyone in town seems to love. She wants to leave tiny Steadfast, Nebraska and chase a bigger life, but she is tied to home by friendship, family, and her grandmother's worsening memory. Add in a mysterious caller, a dream internship, and a lot of late-night feelings, and the book becomes both a romance and a story about finally deciding what kind of future feels possible.

The tone across the two books is earnest, funny, and a little messy in the best YA way. Poston likes girls who are trying to grow into themselves without hurting the people they love, and she likes letting songs, radio, fandom, and celebrity culture shape the emotional weather of a story. There is kissing and banter, yes, but there is also grief, hometown pressure, and the weird ache of being young enough to dream big and old enough to know choices have consequences.

This is a loose companion series more than one long continuing plot. You can read either book on its own, but starting with The Sound of Us and then moving to We Own the Night gives the music-world connections a little extra resonance.
