Author bio
Orson Scott Card writes science fiction and fantasy about people whose abilities make them valuable to others before they fully understand the cost. His characters often face questions about responsibility, belonging, and whether understanding another person changes what they owe them. The stories can begin with a child learning an unusual skill, then widen into problems affecting a family, a society, or an entire species.
Card was born in Richland, Washington, in 1951. He attended Brigham Young University and later earned a master's degree in English from the University of Utah. He also served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His background includes playwriting, a form that depends on people speaking and acting in response to one another, and that attention to relationships remains visible in his fiction.
His best-known entry point is Ender's Game.
The novel follows Andrew Wiggin, a child recruited into military training during an interstellar conflict. Ender's intelligence and empathy help him understand opponents, but they also make him useful to adults with goals of their own. The story joins the excitement of tactical problems to the less comfortable question of what happens when a talented young person becomes an instrument of a larger plan. It was adapted as a feature film in 2013.
Speaker for the Dead moves into a different kind of inquiry, using a later stage of Ender's life to explore truth, grief, and contact with another intelligent species. The two novels each won both the Hugo and Nebula awards, making Card the first author to receive that pair of honors for novels in consecutive years. Their success reflects two sides of the same fictional world: an urgent account of training for war and a slower examination of what honest understanding might require.
Card's fantasy often gives unusual powers a similarly difficult social meaning. Seventh Son begins the Alvin Maker sequence in an alternate American past where folk abilities are part of daily life. Alvin's gifts make him more than an ordinary child, but learning what to do with them involves other people's hopes and fears. The setting allows Card to connect a personal coming-of-age story with questions about creation, harm, and the kind of community someone might help build.
In The Memory of Earth, the opening Homecoming novel, an artificial intelligence has protected a human settlement from destructive impulses for generations. Its failure threatens a way of life built around that protection. The premise turns a technological problem into a social and moral one: people have to decide how to act when a system they depend on can no longer preserve their familiar world. Pathfinder offers another route into his fiction through a teenager whose ability to see the past reveals unexpected possibilities.
Power rarely stands apart from obligation in his books.
Card has also written shorter fiction and books about writing, including Characters & Viewpoint and How to Write Science Fiction and Fantasy. His catalogue crosses several genres while returning to decisions shaped by family, belief, and community. He lives with his wife in North Carolina. Readers can begin with a military science-fiction story or a fantasy, then follow the recurring question of how a person learns to use an ability without surrendering judgment to those who want to direct it.
