Series background & context
Queenie and Arthur are the dueling narrators of this light mystery series for middle grade readers. Queenie is a pampered, opinionated cat; Arthur is a good natured if slightly muddled dog. They share a home at the Blackberry Hill Inn in Vermont, where their human family runs a small business and repeatedly stumbles into trouble.
The inn belongs to a single mother who is raising her eleven year old twins, Harmony and Bro, while juggling guests, financial stress and small town politics. Queenie sees herself as the true ruler of Blackberry Hill, expertly supervising sunbeams, sofas and breakfast leftovers. Arthur thinks of himself as the loyal guardian of the yard, the twins and the refrigerator. They do not like each other much, at least at first, but both love their humans.
In Ruff vs. Fluff, their uneasy truce is tested when the twins' cousin is accused of murder after a body is found near the inn. Old stories about Prohibition era smuggling, hidden tunnels and bootleg liquor bubble up, and Queenie and Arthur are forced to cooperate to clear their cousin's name. The cat is convinced her intelligence is the key; the dog trusts his nose and his big heart.
The second book, Paws vs. Claws, opens with a missing neighbor cow called Sweet Lady Em, whose cream Queenie considers her due each morning. A new guest with suspicious motives, a friend blamed for leaving the barn unlocked and a violent attack on a local farmer make the stakes higher than a simple lost animal. Again the pets narrate in alternating chapters, each misreading and then slowly grasping what the other has discovered.
In Bark vs. Snark, Queenie is entered in a feline beauty contest at the county fair. When she returns, Arthur is sure something is wrong. The supposedly triumphant winner is oddly friendly, smells a bit off and may not even be the same cat. A missing clown, a swapped pet and a fairground full of distractions force Arthur to work mostly on his own, though Queenie eventually has opinions about that too.
What ties the series together is the contrast between the narrators. Queenie cares about status, comfort and being admired. Arthur cares about food, play and protecting his family. Between them they give readers a funny, slantwise view of murder accusations, secrets among neighbors and the way adult decisions ripple down to kids. The mysteries resolve without graphic detail, keeping the tone cozy and reassuring even as the stakes feel real to Harmony, Bro and their four legged detectives.
