Mrs. Plansky's Revenge

by Spencer Quinn

2023

Florida widow Loretta Plansky thinks she is helping her grandson when she wires money after a late night phone call, only to wake up broke and scammed. Refusing to accept defeat, she follows the trail to a village in Romania, determined to confront the fraudsters and reclaim both her savings and her dignity.

Series background & context

The Mrs. Plansky novels introduce Loretta Plansky, a recent widow in her seventies living in Florida, who is not quite ready to be sidelined. She plays competitive tennis, worries about her very elderly father and fields a steady stream of financial requests from her grown children and grandchildren. On the surface her life looks comfortable; underneath she is restless and unsure what comes next.

In Mrs. Plansky's Revenge, that uncertainty turns into crisis. Woken in the middle of the night by a phone call from someone claiming to be her grandson, Loretta is told he has been arrested and urgently needs bail money. The call sounds just plausible enough, and in her half asleep state she hands over her bank details. By morning, her accounts have been cleaned out and she is the victim of a sophisticated overseas scam.

Law enforcement is sympathetic but not optimistic. The money is gone, the criminals are thousands of miles away and older victims are expected to accept the loss. Loretta, humiliated and furious, decides she will not be just another cautionary tale. Following a thin trail of digital clues, she leaves her Florida condo and heads to a small village in Romania to look for the people who stole her savings and, more importantly, her sense of competence.

The second book, Mrs. Plansky Goes Rogue, finds her back home but not exactly settled. Fresh off a senior tennis championship win with her charming doubles partner Kev Dinardo, she is looking forward to celebrating on his yacht when the boat explodes in a suspicious fire. Soon Kev is missing, her wayward tennis pro son Jack has also disappeared, and her ninety eight year old father seems more interested in his upcoming wedding than in sharing what he knows.

Quinn uses Loretta's point of view to explore scams, elder financial abuse and the ways adult children can lean on parents long past the point of fairness. At the same time the books are nimble and funny. Loretta is aware of her physical limits but willing to push them, whether that means boarding a plane alone for Europe, poking around unfamiliar neighborhoods or ignoring polite advice to let younger people handle danger.

The Mrs. Plansky series sits somewhere between cozy mystery and international caper. There is little explicit violence on the page, and the focus stays on character, wit and the satisfaction of seeing an underestimated older woman outthink people who assumed she would stay home. For readers who enjoy the idea of an amateur sleuth starting a new chapter late in life, these books are a natural companion to the Chet and Bernie world, sharing its warmth and sense that it is never too late to go after what matters.
