Woof

2015
Bowser, a big, food loving mutt newly adopted by eleven year old Birdie Gaux, comes home to discover the family's stuffed prize marlin has been stolen from the bait shop wall. Rumors of a hidden treasure map send Birdie and Bowser into the Louisiana bayou to track thieves, dodge gators and uncover family secrets.
Series background & context
The Bowser and Birdie books are middle grade mysteries set in the small bayou town of St Roch, Louisiana. Narrated by Bowser, a big mixed breed dog with a keen nose and an enthusiastic voice, the series pairs him with eleven year old Birdie Gaux, who lives with her grandmother and dreams of solving real cases.
In Woof, Birdie chooses Bowser from the local pound as a late birthday present, and he goes home with her to Grammy Gaux's bait and tackle shop. Almost immediately a local legend becomes a crime scene when Black Jack, the family's mounted prize marlin, disappears from the wall. Rumors say there might be a treasure map hidden inside the fish, and before long Birdie and Bowser are sneaking through rival fishing emporiums, dodging alligators and following clues through the swamp.
The second book, Arf, brings Birdie closer to the mystery that has haunted her family for years. Strange break ins, a girl with green hair asking questions and a visitor from New Orleans all seem tied to the death of Birdie's father, a police detective killed on duty when she was a baby. Bowser may not understand every human nuance, but he recognizes danger and is determined to keep his girl, and her grandmother, safe.
In Bow Wow, a bull shark rumored to be prowling the swamp sets the whole town buzzing. A big cash bounty on the shark's head brings out some unsavory characters, and when Snoozy, the kindly clerk at the Gaux store, goes missing, Birdie and Bowser start to suspect that the hunt on the water is covering up something uglier on land. Once again their investigation takes them deep into the bayou at night, where the line between adventure and real peril gets thin.
Across the series, Bowser's narration keeps the tone buoyant even when the stakes are serious. He is generous, food obsessed and occasionally baffled by human behavior, yet he notices smells, sounds and small gestures that other characters miss. Birdie, for her part, is smart, loyal and sometimes a little too brave, and her determination to uncover the truth about her family gives the books an emotional through line.
The Bowser and Birdie novels are built for readers around eight to twelve, but they work well aloud for younger children and have enough layered humor for adults to enjoy. There is real danger in St Roch, yet the violence stays off stage, and the focus remains on friendship, courage and the ways a kid and her dog can nudge a whole town toward a better ending. If you like the idea of Chet and Bernie but want something age appropriate, this series is a natural place to start.
