Author bio

SM Reine writes dark fantasy under a name a lot of readers know from urban fantasy, but the person behind it tends to introduce herself more simply: Sara. She was born in the Midwest, spent part of her childhood overseas as an Air Force brat, and eventually came back to the United States to settle in Nevada. That sense of movement shows up in her work, where home is often something her characters have to fight for.

She started young.

Reine has said she wanted to be a writer for almost her whole life, after giving up on a childhood plan to become a velociraptor. She wrote her first book when she was around twelve, and she kept going. That long practice helps explain how she built not just a handful of novels, but a whole web of connected series.

Most of her best known books live inside the Descentverse, a shared fantasy setting where angels, demons, witches, werewolves, vampires, and ordinary humans keep crashing into one another. If you start with Death's Hand, you meet Elise Kavanagh, a retired demon hunter dragged back into the worst kind of work. If you jump to Six Moon Summer, you get a darker young adult werewolf story through Rylie Gresham. Witch Hunt shifts the tone again, following agent Cèsar Hawke through supernatural crime scenes and government magic bureaucracy.

That range is a big part of the appeal.

Even when the lead characters change, Reine tends to come back to a few favorite pressures: people with ugly pasts, hidden supernatural systems, bad bargains, and the cost of power. Books like Drawing Dead bring that same energy to vampire hunting in Las Vegas, while the Mage Craft novels lean harder into memory loss, court politics, and dangerous magic. Readers who stay with her for a while usually do it because the world keeps widening without losing its bite.

She has also moved outside that connected fantasy world. With She Killed Him First and His Memory in Ashes, she turned toward grounded suspense, trading demons for human crime, cover-ups, and women pushed into impossible situations. The shift makes sense. Even in her fantasy, she has always liked pressure, secrets, and protagonists who have to act before they are ready.

She likes the dark stuff, but she also likes a joke.

That comes through in her public voice as much as in her fiction. She talks about movies, video games, and geek culture with the same enthusiasm she brings to books. She has written about working at a treadmill desk, argued cheerfully about film, and mentioned the black cats and other furry monsters that share her Nevada home. It is a very human counterweight to stories full of Hellmouths, blood oaths, and gods behaving badly.

So if you are browsing SM Reine for the first time, it helps to know this is a writer who thinks big but likes concrete details. Her worlds are full of monsters, but her books tend to stick because the people inside them feel cornered, stubborn, funny, frightened, or all four at once. That mix has carried her from YA werewolves to urban fantasy epics to suspense thrillers, and it is why so many readers end up hopping from one series to the next.
