Michael Mammay's Planetside series is military science fiction with the engine of a mystery. Its central figure, Colonel Carl Butler, is a capable former Army officer who would rather be left alone, but repeatedly gets pulled toward cases involving missing people, concealed motives, and powerful organizations that prefer not to answer questions.

Planetside starts with Butler leaving semi-retirement to investigate the disappearance of a high councilor's son from Cappa Base, a station over a war-ravaged planet. By Darkside, Butler has a small, familiar crew around him. Mac brings physical backup and an instinct to help people, while Ganos handles much of the technical side. Their search for a missing father leads to Taug, a mined moon where old enemies and fresh disappearances overlap. Blindside continues threads from that mission while giving Mac a bigger role, as an apparent runaway case and deaths tied to Taug begin pointing in the same direction.

These are brisk, grounded stories about soldiers and ex-soldiers dealing with power, loyalty, and the gap between official missions and the people caught inside them. Expect investigations, action, dry humor, and teams that argue because the stakes are real. Start with Planetside: each book has its own main mystery, but Butler's reputation, relationships, and unresolved problems carry forward.
