Intervention

3

Danger Close

4

Counterstrike

5

Check Fire

by Daniel Gibbs

Political pressure to avoid bad headlines clashes with field commanders’ demand for decisive action. When an operation goes sideways, Arthur faces scrutiny from both superiors and subordinates while trying to prevent a bloody overreaction from undoing hard-won gains.

Battlestations

by Daniel Gibbs

2025

Assigned to peacekeeping duty in the Orion Spur, engineer-turned-officer Arthur Hanson expects minor patrols, not war. When coordinated terrorist strikes devastate the local fleet, he must step up as acting commander of the CSV Margaret Thatcher or watch innocents die.

Series background & context

The Iron Fleet moves the timeline into a tense postwar era, when victory has left the Terran Coalition overextended, complacent, and vulnerable. Instead of facing an obvious enemy armada, the Coalition Defense Force finds itself trying to police the Orion Spur against terrorism, unrest, and renewed interference from the League of Sol.

The series focuses on Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Hanson, a self-described nerdy engineer who has just been promoted to second-in-command of the CSV Margaret Thatcher. The ship, named after the "Iron Lady," is part of a peacekeeping contingent deployed to former League-held territory. On paper the job is straightforward: show the flag, deter trouble, and help rebuild.

In Battlestations, that illusion is shattered. A wave of coordinated terrorist attacks rips through the Orion Spur, destroying ships and installations across multiple systems. The Margaret Thatcher barely survives its own brush with disaster, suffering heavy losses in the process. With much of the fleet in ruins and reinforcements delayed by political bickering back home, Arthur suddenly finds himself the senior surviving officer.

Leadership does not come easily to him. Arthur is used to systems diagrams and engineering reports, not making life-or-death calls for thousands of people. But the survivors on scattered ships and stations look to the Margaret Thatcher for direction. He must step into a command role he never sought, hunting down terror cells that show shocking brutality toward civilians and prisoners alike.

Intervention raises the stakes by tying those attacks to a mass hostage situation. Intelligence indicates that hundreds of innocents are being held as bargaining chips in a plan designed to paralyze the Coalition’s political will. With few ships left in-theater and orders to avoid escalation, Arthur chooses to act anyway, risking mutiny and court-martial to mount a rescue that may save lives but inflame tensions.

In Counterstrike, the enemy’s backers become more obvious. League-built warships appear in what was supposed to be a low-intensity theater, ambushing newly arrived Coalition reinforcements and even destroying an unarmed hospital ship. Arthur and his crew face not only a resurgent external foe but growing anger within their own ranks as casualties mount and prisoners yield only limited intel.

Later volumes—Danger Close, Check Fire, and Deep Strike—continue to explore the fine line between measured response and total war. Hanson faces pressure from politicians who want a quick victory without bad headlines, subordinates who are ready to cross moral lines to avenge fallen comrades, and allies with their own agendas in the Spur. Each operation forces him to balance immediate tactical gains against long-term stability in a region already scarred by decades of conflict.

Readers interested in post-conflict stories, where yesterday’s heroes have to become peacekeepers and counterinsurgents, will find The Iron Fleet compelling. It ties closely into the legacy of ships like the Margaret Thatcher and the people introduced in earlier series, but its focus on terrorism and gray-zone warfare gives it a distinct flavor within the broader universe.
