Author bio

Michael Mammay writes science fiction shaped by a long Army career, but his books are rarely just about tactics or hardware. A retired Army officer and United States Military Academy graduate, he tends to put soldiers, veterans, and people in command at the center of complicated problems. His service took him through Desert Storm, Somalia, Iraq, and Afghanistan, and he earned a master's degree in military history, with a focus on the American Civil War.

Writing had been in the back of his mind for a long time. In college in 1988, Mammay told his mother he wanted to be an author, then did very little about it for decades. He began writing seriously around 2013, starting with a large fantasy manuscript he now freely says was not ready.

He learned among critique partners. Feedback helped him see where that early draft fell short, and he began studying structure and revising with more purpose. In 2014, while serving at Kandahar in Afghanistan, he found the basic missing-person idea that became Planetside.

A new first-person approach unlocked the story.

Mammay has said that reading Gone Girl showed him the energy a close first-person voice could bring to a mystery. He drafted the opening of Planetside, sent it to trusted readers, and got the response he needed to continue. After a 2015 Pitch Wars mentorship with Dan Koboldt and a period of querying, the novel reached readers in 2018.

Planetside introduces Colonel Carl Butler, an officer called out of semi-retirement to investigate a disappearance at a base above a war-torn planet. It set the pattern for the continuing series: a sharp investigation, a tight team, and pressure from military, corporate, and political power. Spaceside, Colonyside, Darkside, and Blindside keep Butler moving through new places and new problems.

The first book was intended to stand alone.

Outside Butler's orbit, Mammay has tested the same interest in teamwork and command from different angles. The Misfit Soldier follows a con artist turned soldier who gathers an unlikely crew for a dangerous rescue and heist. The Weight of Command puts inexperienced Lieutenant Kiera Markov in an emergency leadership role on a remote world. In Generation Ship, a colony vessel nearing its destination becomes a pressure cooker for competing plans, rigid rules, and an uncertain planet.

Readers often come for the forward motion and practical detail, then stay for the friction inside a squad or chain of command. His stories make room for dry humor, imperfect plans, stubborn loyalty, and the human cost that remains after a mission briefing turns into a real crisis.

He lives with his wife in Georgia and continues to write science fiction, sometimes with military characters, sometimes with a different setup, but usually with trouble close behind.
