Christine Lynn Herman Books in Order

Christine Lynn Herman was born in New York City and spent much of her childhood in Japan and Hong Kong. That early sense of moving between places has stayed with her work. Her novels often put young people in towns or communities that feel familiar on the surface, then reveal the strange history, hidden rules, and old hurts underneath.

She returned to the United States for college, studying English at the University of Rochester in upstate New York. The area later helped inspire the wooded, snowbound mood of Four Paths, the setting of her first young adult novel. After graduating, Herman went back to New York and worked in publishing during the day while writing fiction at night.

Young adult fantasy was already a big part of her reading life. She has spoken about loving fantasy and speculative fiction as a teen, and about beginning stories with characters before building the setting and plot around them.

Her debut, The Devouring Gray, introduced Four Paths, New York, a small town where descendants of its founders are tied to the Gray, a dangerous other dimension that holds a monster. The book follows Violet Saunders and other teens carrying the weight of their families' past. It also makes room for grief, fear, friendship, queer identity, and the awkward business of figuring out who you are when everybody else thinks they know your role.

The follow-up, The Deck of Omens, returns to Four Paths as the damage caused by the Gray begins spreading beyond its borders. Across the duology, Herman keeps the focus on relationships as much as magic. Family histories matter, but so do broken trust, old resentments, and the hard work of choosing what to do next.

Small towns can keep a lot of secrets.

With The Drowning Summer, Herman moved to a haunted Long Island community still shaken by the unsolved murders of three teenagers. Mina Zanetti and Evelyn Mackenzie are pulled back together by a supernatural ritual and an old crime that will not stay buried. It is a ghost story and a mystery, but it is also about estranged friends learning whether they can trust each other again.

Herman also writes with Amanda Foody. Their All of Us Villains duology sends seven teenagers from rival families into a deadly magical tournament in Ilvernath. The two writers initially split the main characters between them, then revised the manuscript together until both voices ran through the whole story. The result is a multi-viewpoint fantasy where family labels, public expectations, and survival keep colliding.

Their books tend to ask what people inherit from the adults before them, and whether they can refuse the part they have been assigned. Magic and monsters raise the stakes, but the characters still have to deal with loss, anger, attraction, loyalty, and the uncomfortable truth that growing up does not come with a clean map.

Herman now lives in Massachusetts with their partner and cat. They publish some books under the name C. L. Herman, but the ingredients readers can expect remain much the same: eerie places, complicated teens, and danger that is never only supernatural.
