Series background & context

The Pippin Lane Hawthorne, or Book Magic, Mysteries mix a coastal mystery with family lore, old grief, and real magic. Pippin and her twin brother Grey return to Devil's Cove, an Outer Banks island tied to their childhood and the unexplained deaths of their parents. They expect a difficult homecoming. Instead, they find secrets waiting in the past.

Pippin belongs to a line of bibliomancers. The women in her family can find truth, guidance, and glimpses of what may come through books. Pippin has spent years avoiding that inheritance, partly because reading has never come easily to her and partly because the gift feels tied to danger. But Devil's Cove gives her no room to stay detached.

Books hold clues here.

The Lane family is also trapped by an ancient Irish curse. The women are threatened in childbirth, while the men are said to be claimed by the sea. As Pippin learns more about the curse, she must decide whether she can trust the strange messages she receives and whether she is willing to claim the power she has tried to leave behind.

The cases begin with local deaths and suspicious discoveries, but the larger story runs through every installment. Pippin works to uncover what happened to her parents, protect Grey, and understand the history that connects their family to Devil's Cove. The island's weather, shoreline, old houses, and legends give the series a moodier feel than a typical small-town cozy.

Still, it is not all darkness. Pippin builds friendships, turns the house she and Grey inherit into Sea Captain's Inn, and gradually makes a home in a place that once only represented loss. Her circle includes people who offer practical help, honest pushback, and the kind of support she has long avoided.

Start with Murder in Devil's Cove for Pippin's return and the main mystery of the Lane family. The books work best in order because the curse, Pippin's relationships, and her understanding of bibliomancy all develop from one case to the next.
