Series background & context
The Magical Dressmaking Mysteries take place in Bliss, Texas, where former Manhattan designer Harlow Jane Cassidy starts over in a farmhouse inherited from her great-grandmother. Harlow opens her own dressmaking boutique, Buttons & Bows, hoping for a quieter life and a chance to make clothes for people who will truly wear and love them.
Bliss has other plans. Harlow soon discovers that the Cassidy women carry a strange family charm. When she sews a garment, the finished piece can help bring its wearer's deepest wish into reach. It is a powerful gift, but wishes are complicated, and Harlow must learn where help ends and unintended consequences begin.
Then the murders start.
Harlow's great-grandmother, Meemaw, remains a lively presence in the old house and often offers advice that is useful, inconvenient, or both. The family history also reaches back to an alternate version of Butch Cassidy's story, giving the series a playful legend beneath its Texas small-town setting.
Each mystery is tied to a dress, costume, event, or client. A wedding gown, a pageant dress, homecoming couture, aprons, and holiday fashion all bring Harlow into contact with people carrying private hopes and public feuds. Once someone dies, her knowledge of the town and her ability to read what people want make her a natural, if reluctant, investigator.
The tone is cozy and lightly paranormal. There is romance, friendship, craft detail, and plenty of small-town gossip, but the books also spend time on Harlow's changing relationship with her mother, her grandmother's legacy, and her place in Bliss. Harlow does not have every answer right away. Watching her grow into her talent is one of the series' ongoing pleasures.
Begin with Pleating for Mercy, where Harlow arrives in Bliss and learns that her new life comes with both magic and murder. The cases have their own solutions, but the family charm and Harlow's relationships make the series especially rewarding in order.
