Series background & context
The Pig the Pug books follow one very badly behaved dog and the long-suffering friends who put up with him. Pig is small, round, and instantly memorable, with bulging eyes and an attitude so big it barely fits on the page.
He lives with Trevor, a gentle dachshund who just wants to play nicely. Pig, however, wants everything his own way. In the first book he hoards every toy in the house and refuses to share a single one. Later stories zoom in on different terrible habits: cheating to win games, telling outrageous lies, ducking baths, sulking on the couch, or throwing himself into holidays and vacations with zero manners.
Each book follows a similar rhythm. Blabey writes in punchy rhyming lines that are made to be read aloud, then pays off the bad behavior with a slapstick disaster. Pig’s selfish choices always backfire in some spectacular, physical way. He might tumble headfirst out a window, get flattened by a falling bowl, or wind up dangling from a Christmas decoration. Kids laugh at the chaos while also seeing very clearly why his choices do not work.
Underneath the jokes, the series quietly covers big social lessons. Sharing, sportsmanship, honesty, hygiene, respect for others, even how to behave as a tourist or a classmate are all tucked into the different titles. Trevor almost always models the kinder path, and occasionally other dogs or humans step in to remind Pig that the world does not revolve around him.
Visually, the books are bold and simple, with solid backgrounds and strong shapes that make them easy to follow in a busy classroom or at bedtime. Pig’s expressions swing from smug to horrified in a heartbeat, which is a big part of the humor. Young listeners can “read” his mood long before the rhyme reaches the punch line.
Later entries broaden Pig’s world. He crashes Christmas in Pig the Elf, wreaks havoc on photo shoots in Pig the Star, drags his bad habits around the globe in Pig the Tourist, and even faces obedience school in Pig the Rebel. There are also board books like Cranky Pug that use his face to introduce simple emotions to toddlers.
You can dip into the series in any order, but starting with Pig the Pug or Pig the Winner gives the clearest sense of his personality and his relationship with Trevor. From there, kids tend to pick whichever cover or theme makes them laugh. However you approach it, these books are built for giggles, quick conversations about behavior, and lots of re-reads.
