When You Are Mine

by Michael Robotham

2021

Philomena McCarthy has fought her way into the Metropolitan Police despite being the daughter of a notorious gangster. Responding to a domestic assault, she rescues Tempe Brown from a celebrated detective, only to be warned off the case. As Tempe insinuates herself into Phil’s life, obsession, corruption and violence close in.

Series background & context

Philomena “Phil” McCarthy is one of Michael Robotham’s most compelling creations: a young London police constable who carries both a badge and the legacy of a crime family. The daughter of a charismatic but feared gangland figure, Phil has spent her life trying to prove she is nothing like her father—even as his influence shadows every decision she makes.

In When You Are Mine, Phil has finally earned a place in the Metropolitan Police and is determined to build a career by doing things the right way. A routine call to a domestic disturbance changes everything. She and her partner arrive to find Tempe Brown, a bruised and frightened woman, and the man accused of assaulting her: a highly decorated detective with powerful friends inside the force. When Phil refuses to look the other way, she makes an enemy in her own ranks and forms a dangerously intense bond with Tempe, whose neediness and secrets begin to seep into every corner of Phil’s life.

The sequel, The White Crow, raises the stakes. On night patrol Phil discovers a barefoot child in pyjamas, covered in blood and unable to wake her mother. At almost the same moment, a prominent jeweller is found in his shop with a bomb strapped to his chest and millions missing from the safe. As the investigations collide, evidence suggests that Phil’s father and uncles may be tangled up in the crimes through their supposedly respectable business interests. Phil is forced to decide how far she can trust the family who raised her and the institution she serves.

Throughout the series Robotham uses Phil’s divided loyalties to explore corruption, misogyny and loyalty inside modern policing. She is ambitious and principled, but also impulsive, sometimes naïve and deeply attached to the very people she ought to keep at arm’s length. Her colleagues view her with a mix of admiration and suspicion, never sure whether she is a liability or their bravest officer.

What readers get from the Philomena McCarthy books is a fast‑moving blend of police procedural and psychological thriller, told from the perspective of a woman who lives on the fault line between law and organised crime. The novels are rich with London atmosphere, family tensions and moral grey areas. If you’re drawn to stories about strong but conflicted heroines navigating dangerous workplaces and even more dangerous relationships, this is a series to read in order from When You Are Mine to The White Crow.
