Series background & context

At the heart of the Cyrus Haven series is an unlikely household: a forensic psychologist who survived a childhood massacre and a young woman with an uncanny gift for detecting lies. Together, Cyrus and Evie Cormac are drawn into some of Michael Robotham’s most emotionally charged and morally complex thrillers.

Years before the series begins, Cyrus’s older brother Elias killed their parents and twin sisters while in the grip of psychosis. Cyrus survived by hiding and has spent his adult life studying violence and trauma, working with the police in and around Nottingham. He is calm, observant and compassionate, but still wrestling with guilt and unresolved grief.

Evie enters his life in Good Girl, Bad Girl. As a child she was discovered hidden in a secret room beside the tortured body of a man, with no known name, age or past. Now a teenager in a secure children’s home, she insists she is ready to live independently. When Cyrus is asked to assess her, he discovers that Evie can tell when people are lying—a talent that both fascinates and unnerves him. At the same time he is profiling the killer of a teenage skating star, a case that begins to intersect with Evie’s shadowy history.

In When She Was Good, Cyrus digs deeper into how Evie was trafficked and the criminals who profited from her abuse. The closer he gets to the truth, the more dangerous life becomes for both of them, as powerful men realise that the last witness to their crimes is still alive. The novel turns the series into a high‑stakes battle between survivors and the people who believe they are untouchable.

Lying Beside You finds Cyrus preparing for the supervised release of Elias from a secure hospital, even as he consults on a case involving a murdered father and several missing women. Evie is the only person who glimpses the abductor, but her credibility is questioned and her impulsive actions complicate the investigation. Bringing Elias home forces Cyrus to confront whether forgiveness is possible, while Evie has to decide how much she trusts the man who saved her.

The fourth book takes Cyrus and Evie to a windswept stretch of the English coastline, where the bodies of migrants wash ashore after a small boat is apparently rammed at sea. The lone teenage survivor hints at a connection to the same trafficking network that once controlled Evie, and Cyrus is pulled into an investigation that may finally reveal the full truth about her past.

Across the Cyrus Haven novels, Robotham combines propulsive plotting with a deep exploration of trauma, found family and moral responsibility. The crimes are harrowing, but the emotional core of the series lies in the evolving bond between Cyrus and Evie as they struggle to build a safe life out of damaged beginnings. Reading the books in order lets you watch that relationship grow more fragile, funny and fierce with every case.
