Author bio

Phillipa Nefri Clark lives just outside a small country town in Victoria, Australia, and spends her days dreaming up stories about love, secrets, and second chances.

She grew up around wild beaches and misty cliffs, always with a dog or horse close by, and those coastal landscapes are woven through her fiction. The sea, small towns, and big skies often shape the mood of her books.

Before turning to novels, Phillipa worked in the family pet supplies business in a mix of retail and marketing. She wrote expert pieces on dogs, edited specialist yearbooks, put together articles for newspapers, and learned how to speak clearly to real people rather than hide behind jargon.

The idea that became The Stationmaster's Cottage sat with her for years. A real cottage near her home, a childhood spent in seaside towns, and an emotional reunion with her sister after decades apart all fed into the story. She first shaped it as a screenplay, then eventually rewrote it as the novel that introduced readers to Rivers End.

From that coastal love story grew a whole collection of books set in and around the town, including Jasmine Sea, The Secrets of Palmerston House, and The Christmas Key. These stories mix romance, mystery, and family history, following characters who have been bruised by life yet are willing to risk their hearts again.

Phillipa also has a lighter, quirkier side. In her Charlotte Dean and Daphne Jones stories, small Australian towns hide bookshops, cafés, and wedding venues where trouble is never far away. Mysteries like Christmas Crime in Kingfisher Falls and the later-in-life adventures of Daphne, a travelling celebrant who keeps stumbling across bodies, give readers puzzles with warmth, humour, and a safe landing.

When she wanted to explore the darker edge of crime, she created Detective Sergeant Liz Moorland. Books such as Last Known Contact and Lest We Forgive follow Liz and her colleagues through major investigations around Melbourne, balancing procedural detail with the emotional cost of the work. Even in her grittier stories, Phillipa avoids graphic violence and focuses on people, choices, and consequences.

Her Temple River novels and the Maple Gardens Matchmakers romances let her lean into women's fiction and contemporary love stories. In books like The Cottage at Whisper Lake and The Heart Match, characters grapple with family rifts, aging parents, lost heirlooms, and the long tail of past mistakes, all while inching toward hope.

Across genres, certain threads repeat. Phillipa writes about families finding their way back to one another, about secrets finally told, and about ordinary people standing up when it matters. She likes endings that feel earned and hopeful, whether that means a solved case, a reunited family, or a couple who have finally learned to trust.

At home, she shares life with her husband, two adult sons, and a much-loved black Labrador. When she is not at her desk, she is often in the vegetable garden, thinking through a tricky plot, or listening to music with the dog at her feet. Early mornings, long stretches of quiet work, and regular breaks to walk in nature keep her stories moving and her imagination stocked for the next book.
