Christmas Crime in Kingfisher Falls / The Christmas Tree Thief / Deadly Start

by Phillipa Nefri Clark

2019

New to Kingfisher Falls, former psychiatrist Charlotte Dean plans to keep her head down working in Rosie's bookshop. A string of brazen Christmas tree thefts and rising tension around a local family drag her into a case where the wrong suspect could pay the price.

Series background & context

The Charlotte Dean Mysteries centre on Doctor Charlotte Dean, a former psychiatrist who has walked away from a high-pressure career and a traumatic past. She lands in Kingfisher Falls, a pretty country town in Victoria's Macedon Ranges, to work in Rosie's bookshop and live in the apartment above.

Charlotte plans a quiet life surrounded by stories, but Kingfisher Falls has other ideas. In the first book, often known as Christmas Crime in Kingfisher Falls, thefts of Christmas trees escalate into something far more serious, and Charlotte cannot stand by while the wrong people are blamed. Her boss Rosie, the snobby book club ladies, and a dubious local police officer all have their own opinions about what is going on.

Subsequent books see Charlotte entangled in the death of a book club member, an old grave and a missing young woman, and a supposedly accidental tragedy that feels anything but random. The planned arrival of a flashy new shopping mall, tensions on the town council, and visitors from Charlotte's old life in the city keep raising the stakes.

Kingfisher Falls itself is a major drawcard. The series is filled with café catch-ups, bookshop windows dressed for each season, a handsome but wary senior constable, and Rosie's two cats, Mellow and Mayhem, who treat the shop as their personal kingdom. Underneath the postcard charm, though, lie grudges, secrets, and people who will do almost anything to protect their reputations.

Charlotte brings a psychologist's eye to every interaction, but her own history means she does not always see herself clearly. Part of the pleasure of the series is watching her slowly trust her instincts again, build friendships, and consider whether this town could truly be home.

These are small-town cozy mysteries with an Australian flavour, light on gore and heavy on character. Each book contains a complete whodunit, yet reading in order lets you follow Charlotte's emotional journey and enjoy the ongoing feuds, romances, and running jokes that make Kingfisher Falls feel real.
