The Detective Liz Moorland series follows DS Liz Moorland and her colleagues in and around Melbourne as they tackle major crimes that hit painfully close to home. Liz is a by-the-book homicide detective whose sense of justice is sharpened by personal loss.

The wider cast includes fellow detectives with very different approaches, a retired street cop weighed down by past mistakes, and officers in Missing Persons whose work sometimes crosses hers. Lest We Forgive opens with a late-night car crash on an icy road that kills the daughter and son-in-law of Liz's former colleague, Vince Carter. Their eight-year-old daughter Melanie survives, and as Vince suspects the crash was no accident, Liz's hunt for an escaped criminal becomes entwined with a more personal threat.

In Lest Bridges Burn, a young girl disappears from the same park where Liz's niece vanished eighteen years earlier. The similarities are chilling, and when the abductor insists on dealing only with Liz, she must balance her role as lead investigator with the risk of being removed from a case that matters more than any other.

Lest Tides Turn shifts to the coast when Lyndall, a once-famous artist and crack shot, goes missing from her fortified home. Now part of a covert team, Liz follows a trail that leads through witness protection, hidden identities, and danger that may be coming from within her own ranks.

Later books deepen the cold-case angle and push Liz further into a game where past and present collide and justice has a high personal cost. The stories are page-turning police procedurals that avoid graphic violence against children or animals while still delivering tension, twists, and emotional stakes.

You can read the novels on their own, especially if you begin with Last Known Contact, which introduces some of the world, but following them in order gives the fullest sense of how each case reshapes Liz, her team, and the delicate trust between them.
