Series background & context

Phantom Queen Diaries is the third major pillar of the Templeverse, co-written with Cameron O'Connell and narrated by Quinn MacKenna. Quinn is a black-market arms dealer in Boston who specializes in dangerous magical artifacts and even more dangerous favors.

On paper she is a small-time smuggler with a bad attitude and worse drinking habits. In practice she is a Fae half-breed whose body shrugs off most magic, and she has spent her adult life trading favors for information that might lead her to the Land of the Fae and the truth about her missing father.

In Whiskey Ginger, a job goes sideways when Quinn accidentally steals from Nate Temple, dropping her straight into the crossfire of dragons, wizards, and old grudges that stretch far beyond Boston's back alleys. Follow up adventures in Cosmopolitan, Old Fashioned, and Dark and Stormy drag her to bigger cities and stranger bars as she pays off debts, chases cursed objects, and learns that Heaven and Hell have taken an interest in her soul.

The middle of the series widens the stage. Quinn heads to Russia in Moscow Mule to save a kidnapped friend from shifter bears, digs into Boston's witch covens and Fae courts in Witches Brew, and is yanked into other realms in books like Salty Dog and Sea Breeze. Atlantis, Titan strongholds, and mythic islands all show up, and each new deal she strikes with gods or Fae carries a heavier price.

By the time the story reaches Hurricane and Brimstone Kiss, Quinn has become something more than human, a part-time goddess tied to battlefields and the dead. She spends time in Valhalla, bargains with Hades, and fights alongside or against legendary figures while still worrying about her favorite bartender, her found family, and whether she is becoming the kind of monster she used to hunt.

Later volumes like Moonshine, Yuletide Punch, Snakebite, and Boilermaker lean into time-bending mysteries and the looming Omega War that threatens the entire Templeverse. Quinn's choices echo into other series, revealing hidden corners of Nate and Callie's histories. Expect bar-fight humor, Irish swearing, and sudden emotional gut punches wrapped in fast, punchy action scenes.

If you already know Nate or Callie, the Phantom Queen Diaries fills in what they do when they are not on the page in their own books. If you start here instead, you get a street-level view of the same universe from someone who never asked to be a hero and is still not sure she wants the job.
