Series background & context
Shade of Devil steps away from modern St. Louis and Boston and rewinds the clock to the very first vampire. These books follow Sorin Ambrogio, a warlord so feared that people whispered his name as if it were another word for the Devil.
Before anyone had heard of Dracula, Sorin ruled the night across medieval Europe with two equally terrifying companions: Lucian, the first werewolf, and Nero, the first warlock. Together they were an unholy trinity, carving their legends into battlefield mud and castle walls while the mortal world tried to pretend monsters were just stories.
Over time Sorin and his brothers grow tired of endless bloodshed and set their sights on the so-called New World. They ally themselves with a Native tribe and begin to imagine a different kind of existence, one that does not end in rivers of blood. That fragile peace shatters when Sorin's own spawn, Dracula, decides that history is only big enough for one first vampire and makes a grab for his creator's title.
The opening novel, Devil's Dream, shows the betrayal that leaves Sorin fatally wounded and cast into a magical sleep that lasts for centuries. A shaman's desperate spell preserves him beneath the earth until he wakes in present-day New York City, half legend and half lost soldier in a world of neon, skyscrapers, and new kinds of monsters. City life offers fresh prey, but it also confronts him with his own past in ways he is not ready for.
Sequels Devil's Cry and Devil’s Blood dig into that fallout. Sorin hunts Dracula through the alleys and high-rises of New York while new players, including a descendant of the famous vampire hunter family Helsing, complicate his thirst for revenge. Old oaths, new loyalties, and the thin line between love and obsession all collide as Sorin decides whether he is still the devil everyone feared or something closer to a reluctant guardian.
Tonally, the trilogy is darker and more horror-leaning than the Nate, Callie, or Quinn books, but it shares the same fondness for myth, sharp banter, and big set pieces. It fills in a long backstory that echoes into the Templeverse at large, showing how ancient grudges, divine curses, and one very angry vampire helped shape the wars being fought in the modern age.
