Series background & context

Feathers and Fire shifts the Templeverse spotlight to Callie Penrose, a young wizard with a hint of angelic blood who works for the Vatican's monster-hunting arm in Kansas City. Callie is smart, stubborn, and painfully aware that she does not fit neatly inside anyone's idea of holy.

Her day job involves tracking down demons, rogue shifters, and cursed relics for the Shepherds, a secretive order of warrior priests. It is supposed to be simple: follow orders, smite threats, go to confession later. Instead Callie keeps finding cracks in the stories she has been told about Heaven and Hell, and every time she asks a question the answers get messier.

The early books revolve around the Spear of Longinus, an artifact tied to the Crucifixion that draws every faction in the city into open conflict. Callie is caught between the Church, supernatural gangs, and outsiders like Nate Temple, all of them convinced they know what is best for her. Being framed for crimes she did not commit only hardens her resolve to choose her own path, even if it makes her a target.

As the series continues, the action moves from Kansas City to Rome and back again. The Vatican itself becomes a battleground, with rival popes, traitor priests, and an ancient plot that forces Callie to question who she can trust at all. Strange voices whisper in her head when she uses her magic, and an angelic grace she never asked for keeps putting a thumb on the scales.

Later arcs deal with the fallout of those secrets. Callie learns why both Heaven and Hell are obsessed with her, takes up legendary weapons like Excalibur and the Spear, and becomes entangled with Dracula and the Seven Deadly Sins. Titles like Black Sheep, Godless, Anghellic, Trinity, Halo Breaker, and Angel Dust push her from rookie hunter toward something far more dangerous, a Horsewoman who might save the world or burn it down.

Through all of it, the books keep a grounded core. Callie wrestles with faith, friendship, guilt, and anger while juggling bad coffee, thin patience, and a very complicated relationship with authority. The tone mixes dark fantasy and monster mayhem with sharp, sometimes painful character beats, making Feathers and Fire a natural follow up if you like the Nate Temple novels but want a different perspective on the same wars.
