Series background & context
Phantom Protectors is one of Kate Allenton's earlier paranormal action-romance series, and it wears that identity proudly. This is a team book at heart, built around gifted operatives, secret agendas, dangerous missions, and an enemy organization that needs to be taken down piece by piece.
The Protectors are not ordinary law enforcement. They are a found family of fighters, visionaries, and gifted people with unusual abilities, and the books follow different members as the larger war keeps unfolding. That means every romance is tied to a mission, a betrayal, or a revelation that affects more than just one couple.
Everything is personal once the team is involved.
Jamie Bloom helps open the series, and later books widen the circle to characters like Gracie Lister and Brody Conner. The ongoing threat from the Blackstone Society keeps the pressure up, and it gives the series a stronger action spine than many of Allenton's more mystery-based books. There are undercover jobs, long-buried memories, divided loyalties, and plenty of reasons for the characters not to trust what they are being told.
The tone is more overtly paranormal romance than procedural thriller. Readers can expect strong chemistry, dangerous missions, gifted heroes and heroines, and a larger good-versus-evil fight humming in the background. The books are fast and dramatic in a very bingeable way.
If you want psychic and superpowered operatives with romance on the battlefield, start with Reckless Abandon and keep going in order. The team arc matters almost as much as the individual couples.
