The Grace den Herder Trilogy Books in Order

The Grace den Herder Trilogy is Peter Ritchie’s first crime series, following a detective whose work takes her through serious crime, organised criminals, counter-terrorism, and the long shadow of Northern Ireland’s conflict. The books are rooted in Scotland and Northern Ireland, with later action reaching the North Sea coast and criminal networks that stretch across the region.

Grace den Herder is the central figure. She leaves behind an unhappy childhood and a promising legal career to join the Royal Ulster Constabulary during the Troubles. Her ability and determination carry her upward through Special Branch, but success comes with its own strain. The trilogy follows the cost of that work as much as the mechanics of the cases she investigates.

In Noble Cause, Grace faces the consequences of a covert operation that goes wrong in Northern Ireland. Her decision to tell the truth damages her standing, and she is sent to a new Major Crime Team in Scotland. There, attacks on sex workers become a murder inquiry, putting a fragile team under pressure while Grace tries to begin again in an unfamiliar city.

The Shortest Days of the Year widens the story to include Belfast, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and a shifting underworld. A former loyalist hard man moves into the Edinburgh drugs trade, and old paramilitary ties add danger to an already volatile situation. Grace has to deal with mounting violence while trying to keep her own past from overtaking the work in front of her.

The final book, Red Sky in the Morning, finds Grace uncertain whether she can continue in serious crime investigation. An undercover officer has disappeared, and a young woman is found barely alive on the Berwickshire coast after witnessing violence at sea. The investigation leads toward trafficking, organised crime, and the threat of corruption closer to home.

These novels are the earlier versions of stories later revised and reissued in the DCI Grace Macallan series. Grace’s name changed in those editions, but the trilogy remains the place to start for readers who want the original telling of her story.
