In Shores of Death, an undercover officer disappears and a traumatised survivor is found on the Berwickshire coast, drawing Grace toward a violent criminal operation. The books keep the focus on investigations, but they also spend time with the people trying to control the streets and those damaged by that struggle.

Later novels shift the shape of the danger without losing the series’ core. Where No Shadows Fall begins with a death at Barlinnie prison and leads Grace back toward a criminal family with unfinished business. Our Little Secrets puts DI Janet Hadden and Edinburgh’s underworld closer to the centre, as corruption, ambition, and gangland deals start to overlap.

Expect a dark, grounded series with direct language, busy investigations, and a strong sense of how police work can affect life outside the office. The books work best in order because Grace’s career and relationships carry forward, though each one brings a new central case.
