War for the Rose Throne Books in Order

War for the Rose Throne is Peter McLean's dark fantasy series about Tomas Piety, a soldier-priest who comes home from a long war expecting to reclaim his old life. Instead, he finds Ellinburg hungry, frightened, politically unstable, and controlled by people who took his criminal operation while he was away.

The first book, Priest of Bones, begins with Tomas gathering the people he trusts most. There is Bloody Anne, his hard-bitten second-in-command, his brother Jochan, the young fighter Billy the Boy, and the rest of the Pious Men. Tomas wants his streets back, but the work quickly becomes tangled with local power, foreign agents, and the uneasy aftermath of a war that has not really ended.

Coming home is only the first battle.

The series is told in Tomas's direct, sometimes defensive voice. He sees himself as practical and honourable, even when his choices make that claim hard to accept. That tension gives the books their bite. Tomas is loyal to his people, quick to act, and very capable of explaining why the ugly thing he has just done was necessary.

Priest of Lies expands the struggle beyond Ellinburg as Tomas is pulled toward royal politics and the conflict over the Rose Throne itself. Priest of Gallows raises the pressure again, with war, alliances, and old debts closing in. Priest of Crowns brings the main quartet to its conclusion, paying off the political and personal fights that started in the first book.

The tone is rough, fast-moving, and grounded in street-level concerns. There is magic, but it is not the point of every scene. The heart of the series is gang loyalty, military trauma, family, money, religion, and the cost of trying to control a city that keeps being claimed by larger powers.
