Series background & context

Frostgrave: Ghost Archipelago is a fantasy setting built around a chain of islands that appears only once every few centuries. When the islands return, pirates, treasure hunters, wizards, and would-be heroes rush in looking for ancient ruins, strange artefacts, and the legendary Crystal Pool.

The islands are not welcoming. Their old cities and jungle paths are full of dangerous wildlife, traps, sorcery, rival expeditions, and local threats that can turn a promising hunt into a fight to get back to the ship. The setting comes from the tabletop game, but its fiction works as adventure fantasy in its own right.

Every expedition thinks it will be the clever one.

Tales of the Lost Isles is an anthology that offers several different routes into the Ghost Archipelago. Rather than following one hero through a fixed plot, it lets different writers show what the islands look like from the viewpoints of explorers, thieves, fighters, and people with reasons to fear what the ruins contain. Peter McLean contributes the story The Price You Pay.

That anthology format suits the setting. The Ghost Archipelago is less about a single official storyline than a shared place full of opportunities and bad decisions. One story may lean toward treasure hunting, another toward a magical mystery, and another toward survival against something that should have remained buried.

The tone is adventurous but not cosy. There is room for wonder and discovery, yet the islands are dangerous enough that greed usually has consequences. Readers who like fast fantasy quests, strange ruins, competing crews, and a little sword-and-sorcery grit should feel at home.

Start with Tales of the Lost Isles if you want fiction set in the Archipelago. This page can then help you find the stories connected to the setting, understand the basic premise, and decide whether you want a quick standalone adventure or more of the wider Frostgrave world.
