Series background & context

This is the series most readers start with, and it is easy to see why. The books begin with Jed Parish and Mary Richards being thrown together on a murder investigation in A Life for a Life. Parish is the experienced detective. Richards is the new recruit who still has a lot to learn. What follows is not a neat mentor-and-student setup so much as a tense, funny, and sometimes chaotic working partnership that keeps changing as both of them are pushed harder and harder.

The setting is modern police work in and around Essex and London, but these are not tidy case-of-the-week novels. Ellis likes big investigations, ugly crimes, and a cast that grows with the series. A murder can lead to an old orphanage, a missing child case, a cold file, a second team working somewhere else, and a boss making life worse instead of better. That sprawl is part of the appeal.

The tone is dark, busy, and often grisly.

A lot of the cases are serial killer investigations or murders with strange signatures, like the numbered tokens in A Life for a Life, the mutilated victims in The Wages of Sin, or the buried children of The Flesh is Weak. But the real hook is the team around the cases. Parish and Richards are only the center of a much wider circle that includes Ray Kowalski, Jerry, Xena, Stick, pathologists, lawyers, private investigators, and a steady stream of difficult senior officers.

That bigger cast gives the books room to do more than one thing at once. Some chapters stay with the main murder inquiry. Others follow side investigations, legal tangles, private cases, or fallout from earlier books. The result is a world that feels crowded, lived-in, and always on the edge of spinning out of control. Readers who like tight, minimal procedurals may find it a lot. Readers who enjoy long, tangled crime novels usually settle right in.

There is also a strong ongoing story underneath the murders. Parish's past matters. Richards changes a lot from the young constable she is at the start. Friendships shift, bosses come and go, relationships break down, and some cases leave marks that do not disappear when the arrest is made.

If you want a police series that keeps widening as it goes, this is the one. Start at the beginning, because the personal history and the team dynamics matter almost as much as the crimes.
